Welcome to the Kentucky River Watershed Watch (KRWW). For nearly three decades, our network of dedicated volunteers, scientists, and community leaders has worked across the basin to monitor water quality, raise public awareness, and empower local stewardship.
Founded in 1997, incorporated in 2000, Kentucky River Watershed Watch began as a grass-roots, volunteer-driven water monitoring initiative in cooperation with the Sierra Club, Kentucky Waterways Alliance and the Kentucky Division of Water Water Watch program. Across 42 counties, hundreds of community volunteers have gathered thousands of water samples, creating one of the most comprehensive water quality data sets in the region.
Our volunteers helped pinpoint sources of pollution, inform local leaders, and educate communities on the health of their local streams, tributaries, and the mainstem of the Kentucky River.
Now that Watershed Watch in Kentucky DBA Kentucky Watershed Watch is managing water quality monitoring directly, Kentucky RIVER Watershed Watch is expanding its mission under the banner of Kentucky River Basin Advocates to actively drive solutions across the watershed.
We are championing nature-based solutions and stronger community advocacy
to tackle modern water quality and stormwater challenges:
Riparian Buffers & Stream Restoration: Restoring natural vegetation along stream banks to filter runoff, prevent severe erosion, and restore aquatic habitats.
Green Stormwater Infrastructure: Promoting rain gardens, bioswales, and wetlands in rural and urban areas to naturally filter pollutants before they enter our waterways.
Floodplain Protection: Advocating for healthy floodplains that naturally absorb floodwaters, reduce downstream risks, and improve basin-wide resilience.
Community Advocacy: Empowering citizens and local leaders to support policies, land-use planning, and watershed management strategies that prioritize clean, healthy water.
